Happiness Happens

Seeds X, 24

Seed: Happiness Happens

A Chinese proverb attached to an email inspired this Seed.

“If you want happiness for an hour—take a nap. If you want happiness for a day—go fishing. If you want happiness for a month—get married. If you want happiness for a year—inherit a fortune. If you want happiness for a lifetime—help others.”

First, do you want happiness? Or are you, for the most part, happy already? Usually when I ask this question in a therapy session, people are surprised to discover that they’re pretty happy most of the time.

Second, what kind of happiness do you want? Happiness forever? Reach out to others. Happiness for a stolen hour? Read a novel.

Happiness actually comes from happenstance, circumstances, the events of our lives, and isn’t a goal to be sought but a result to allow. She will come calling if we’ll just live our lives to the fullest.

Happiness Sneaks

Seeds X, 16

Seed: Happiness Sneaks

For my sweetie’s birthday, a friend sent her a lovely rainbow-colored heart pin with a door ajar in the center of it. The tag said, “Sometimes happiness sneaks in through a door you didn’t even know you left open.”

Have you ever thought about being a happiness sneak? What would that entail? What kind of happiness sneak might you be?

Would you pick up litter when you see it? Just because it makes you happy. Would you compliment strangers? Just because it makes you happy. Would you give anonymous donations? Just because it makes you happy.

This week become a happiness sneak for just one hour. Do something sneaky that makes you happy!

Happiness Heard Your Name

Seeds IX, 38

Seed: Happiness Heard Your Name

Listen to these words from Sufi poet Hafiz:

Ever since happiness heard your name,
it has been running through the streets trying to find you.

Imagine that! Hearing your name, no matter what street you’re on, anywhere in the world. It’s Happiness, calling to you, you personally.

What is your answer? Yes? No? Maybe? I’m too busy? Not now? Later? Some day? Perhaps? For real? C’mon? What?

Listen for a moment, deeply, interiorly, as quietly as you can. Happiness is calling your name. Please hold still and answer Yes.

Be serene,

Dr. Susan Corso
